Well, Miss Conduct were back in town and this time around a good sized crowd came out to play, unlike for the band's previous low key date in Aberdeen which also happened to be the debut gig for new vocalist Emma Jane. The ghost of previous vocal incumbent Kim Waterson now seems a distant memory and Miss Jane has certainly gelled with this dynamic Welsh outfit and was visibly more confident and at ease on the small Kef stage. Unfortunately she hasn’t quite shaken off the sound problems which Aberdeen seems to provide and with the vocals were slightly low in the mix even the between song banter seemed muffled so as to leave the crowd baffled occasionally. However such problems did not stop what proved to be a very slick and powerful performance from Miss Conduct which, even though not a firing on all cylinders show, was still highly polished and left the crowd baying for more. Musically there are numerous hints in Miss Conduct's sound that hark back to other Welsh maestro’s like Lost Prophets, Funeral For And Friend and even Bullet For My Valentine on some of their up tempo numbers, but they do have a distinctiveness all of their own though maybe occasionally drifting into Paramore territory which isn’t a bad thing. Emma Jane is a right wee cutie and the lads in the band give a very energetic performance on stage which I always appreciate. The fired off with a number from their EP “City Burns Alive” before charging into two new numbers in the shape of “Siren” and “The Hole”. The crowd were bouncing from the off though with a high octane pit forming and the first of many crowd surfers getting some action. Next up another new number “Chapter One” followed crisply with fan favourite “First Love Denial” and then “Eyes Closed”. The set seemed to charge along and the band by this point actually seemed fairly surprised by the highly energetic crowd reaction from the packed floor. The set seemed to blur past quickly as tracks such as “Six Feet Under”, “Telescope” and “Hidden Agenda” followed each other in quick succession, the crowd if anything picking up the pace with some seriously sweaty pit action on the go and, by the time final number and title track of the debut EP “Sinner vs Sinned”, kicked in you could barely hear the band such was the noise. Miss Conduct certainly seem to have expanded their fan base up in the frozen North and, in the main, rode the crest of the wave of bouncing bodies, predominantly of course with kids although there were quite a few of an older age group nodding their heads at the back of the floor. Miss Conduct certainly have the attitude and talent to expand their youth fan base into the wider circles of rock and metal and with their debut full length platter coming later this year I think this is a band that will need watching. There must be something very unusual in the water in Wales at the moment as it just seems to produce quality bands, one after another. |
