Dan Baird & Homemade Sin

Newcastle Trillians

October 6th 2005

Review & Photos - Steve Cummings

The last time Dan Baird played Trillians, back in December 2004 I finished the review off by saying 'Comeback soon please when I am not quite so knackered!'. Well Mr Baird succeeded in one half of this request inn that less than twelve months later he returns to the North East of England, this time rejoicing under the monicker of Dan Baird & Homemade Sin. Different brand, same band. Unfortunately the second half of the request was not met and due to unseemingly amounts of 'real work' over the past few weeks I was as knackered as before. Que sera!

Dan Baird & Co. may not have been as tight musically as in the previous year but they certainly seemed up for the gig and to be honest never stopped smiling throughout. Even a little problem like a blown amp for guitarist Keith McMahan that resulted in an unscheduled ten minute intermission couldn't  stop the fun.

So what did we get for our money, well a whole bunch of tunes covering Mr Baird's entire career from a raucous rendition of 'Keep Your Hands To Yourself', 'Nights of Mystery', 'Myth of Love' t Dan Takes 5. Also on the menu were a handful of cover tunes to please the assembled throng, 'I'm A Believer', 'Day Tripper', 'Walking The Dog' and 'Get It On' to name check but a few. I would have taken note of the set list, if indeed there had been one, however the band seemed to be in a more spontaneous frame of mind playing anything that came to mind whether they really knew the track or not. Certainly made for a laugh.

As the wife said as we left, exhausted and happy, we may have been to bigger and better gigs this year, but for a measley six quid entrance charge and over two hours of quality music we certainly ain't be to any that were better value for money.

At the risk of repeating myself 'Come Back Soon!'
