City And Colour

Birmingham Glee Club

Apr 8th 2008

Review Darren Brushneen

Alexisonfire’s guitarist and "clean" vocalist Dallas Green brought his side project, City and Colour (City -  Dallas: Colour - Green, geddit?) to the UK with support from fellow Canadians Attack In Black.  The Glee club provides an interesting venue for live music, apart from a handful of people standing at the back it is all seated with food being served on tables to those that want it.  This “lounge” feel actually fits in with the tour, with Attack In Black’s indie orientated rock being much more suited to this than when they have supported AOF in a room full of sweaty energetic youths.

Although City and Colour is Dallas Green’s side project there is no shortage of fans as this sold out tour has proved but, Green's distinctive voice aside, there are few comparisons between City And Colour and his day job. The music here is acoustically driven in the main with the audience comprising of a chilled out AOF crowd.  Aside from Green the band is made up of vocalist/guitarist Daniel Romano and guitarist Spencer Burton from Attack In Black who handle drums and bass respectively and during the hour and a half or more on  stage a lot of ground, musically speaking was covered. ‘Cross My Heart’, ‘Hello, I’m In Delaware’, ‘Waiting…’ and ‘Sometimes (I Wish)’ all got served up and the harmonica even made an appearance for a great rendition of the poignant ‘Body In A Box’.  Indeed as the show progressed Green seemed to become more relaxed and at ease as the set improved. Sure there was some friendly heckling with the obligatory AOF questions being bandied around but Green took it all in his stride and joked easily about people taking photos and fans not knowing T-shirt sizes.

This easy humour all helped create the chilled atmosphere and with covers of ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’ and AOF’s ‘Boiled Frogs’ (totally on an acoustic guitar which worked really well) along with set closer ‘What Makes A Man?’ the show proved a success.  However the crowd certainly didn't  want the show to end there and so Green was forced back for an encore of ‘Comin Home’.   With Green finally departing, a good show and a stunning vocal performance under his belt, the crowd dispersed happy in the knowledge that AOF will be at the Reading festival, and City and Colour are to return later in the year for what are bound to be more sold out shows.
