Review Al Hey

Before anyone wonders if the band's name above is a typing error I should point out that on all the band's packaging and on their MySpace site this is the way they show it. One has to say it makes an impression and, if the intention was to show that as a band they are different to the norm, it makes a statement before the listener has even heard a note of music.

Hailing from Brighton and are a four piece instrumental group consisting of CJ Evans, Dory Scott, Adam Cawdrey and Alistair Scott and "It’s Not Enough To reproduce" is their debut EP, a limited edition affair featuring eight tracks. Four of those tracks, Manzanas Y Peras, Look What I’ve Done, 8353-746637 and Don’t Worry Billy, I’ll Protect You, are short soundscapes ranging from twenty-one seconds to a minute and a half, which separate the main music and form surreal interludes. The otherfour tracks which make up the meat of the music one has to say are rather special. Anyone looking for noise merchants who play with attitude and on the edge creativity needs look no further than these guys.

The first run through of the EP had me thinking “what the f#ck is going on” but in the nicest possible way. My ears were being sonically massaged by music that was truly startling. Layered guitars and wonderfully organic sounding drumming had me whisked away into a movie being played out in my head. I found on each play I went somewhere new but always ending up with the same feeling of empowerment. The best way I can describe this is as punk attitude laden Pink Floyd created with on the fly improvisation. Sounds like an earful but if you were to give this music a listen you might just get what I’m trying to imply. A visit to their MySpace site shows a very long list of influences and is a reflection that with their music anything goes as long as it moves and takes you somewhere.

I’m assuming the band has funded this effort themselves and if so they will have had to do it on a budget. All I can do is commend them on managing to record their visceral performances and managing to capture it with whatever resources they had to hand. At the end you're left wondering just what could be achieved if the band had some backing and a big recording budget. The bottom line is this is a very cool and musically sublime EP by musicians who should be saluted for being brave and doing things their way, it’s the only way that music goes forward.
