Unexploded

Review Darren Brushneen

Unexploded are a trip rock band hailing from Denmark centered around singer/songwriter/producer, Spine and this review covers their latest EP, Venomlake, sent through to the site electronically.

Things kick off with “Venom” which is a slow melodic electro rock song.  Whilst their are many different aspects to the music: hints of Host era Paradise Lost, a little bit of old Sisters Of Mercy and even some Alkaline Trio/Heavens, it actually does very little to capture the listener’s attention, rather It just plods along being unlikely to offend anyone, but at the same time also not very inspirational.

To be honest the same comments/criticisms could be made of all the songs as each continues along similar dull lines. Any good moments, such as the start of “Bitchslapping A Crocodile”, are quickly undone as each song becomes monotonous, the whole set continuing in the same vein, never really shifting out of first gear. Some of this could work if it was mixed in with more up-tempo and slightly different sounding material, but as a body of work it all ends up sounding very middle of the road, predictable if you will. Unexploded actually need to actually explode and change the pace and direction of songs to make things more entertaining.  As things are, unless you are into melodic electro rock, then there is probably nothing for you here.
