“Sign of the Times/
Anarchy” is the first promotional release form new
Birmingham band Sick City Kids, band formed by the song
writing partnership of Alex Marshall and Lucas Coe and
bolstered by the addition of Adam Barr and Tony Rhodes.
Recorded at Magic Garden Studios with Gavin Monaghan (The
Editors/The Twang) the result it has a very professional
sharp sound with plenty of wallop when played at high
volumes. The bands sound is a full on indie onslaught that is
brimming with energy and enthusiasm and the one word that
could be used to sum up said sound is boisterous.
“Sign Of The Times” has a
very funked up verse thanks to some furious popping and
slapping from the bass which gives everything a very fresh
flavour and the chorus is big and infectious . “Anarchy”
again sees the tempo and energy levels set to high once more
but this time delivered with slightly more attitude and
muscle. Vocally things do seem to get lost a little bit due
to the power of what is going on around and the chorus
would have had more impact if it had sounded a bit fuller.
Maybe the problem is that the chorus on “Sign Of the Times”
is so strong that it set a benchmark that “Anarchy” couldn't
quite reach. Overall however Sick City Club have produced a
very confident release leaving this reviewer in no doubt
that the band have the ability to progress to the next level
with ease.
