Shotgun Affair
Review Dougie
|
Hailing from Colchester Shotgun Affair are a relatively young band with all of the members still in the their late teens. Forming in 2004 they have evolved from being a covers bands into performing their own, original material and recording a couple of EPs. First the good news the band are musically proficient and certainly they can all play their instruments well. Tom Fogg has a good voice for the material being equal parts Phil Lewis and Jim Morrison. The material itself is a heavy trashy glam inspired amalgam of Guns N Roses and LA Guns with elements of Metallica and even some NWOBHM influences thrown in for good measure. So the guys have the sound and imagine to succeed, the only thing that is missing are the songs. Well that’s not entirely fair. The band as I’ve stated are more than musically confident, it’s just their lyrics are minimal and the bulk of the songs feature long extended musical interludes, fine for prog rock aficionados but not so good for the style of rock the guys are trying to play. What I would suggest would be to go back and listen to their favourite songs and pinpoint what makes the song great to them. I bet you it’s as much the lyrics and the chorus hooks that gets them every time. So guys spend some time on your lyrics and song writing and you could be on to something here. I hope the lads take this criticism in the manner in which is it intended, the whole point of the unsigned band section is to highlight up and coming talent and to give our opinion on that talent. Shotgun Affair are still young and can learn the song writing skills to go along with their obvious musical talent - unlike this old git and I’ve even read books on the subject!
