Mnemosyne

Review Freez

This mini album, or 4 track EP, whichever you prefer, is the second release from five piece Brit-metal outfit Mnemosyne. Written and produced by the band all four tracks are from the fast and chuggy school of new metal (is there such a genre? Well there is now!). Lead singer Kev does a nice line in melody to accompany the thoughtful yet powerful riffs that guitarist Dayv supplies.

“Wrong Direction” opens up with drum samples and some synth action before a rather tinny guitar and bass combo leap in, it gets better as the chorus kicks in but could do with a little work in production to give it more bite. “Wild Places” follows and has a stronger riff which helps the songs identity, though that “recorded in a dustbin” feel still prevails but to a lesser extent.

Third track in is titled “Run”. It shows promise and variety with a Lostprophets style slow build with melody and harmony on top of the thumping bass and neat drum shuffle. A decent track with something different to offer and should be a marker for future projects in my view. Final track ”Emptiness Is Not My Friend” kicks in at over six minutes and is another good effort, excellent vocals and some standard but useful guitar work. All in all this EP shows promise but is let down by its less than salubrious production values.
