Kontraku

Review John Consterdine

Bloody hell! These were the first words that came to mind when I stuck Kontraku’s (pronounced “contra-coo”) demo into my CD player. Opening track “Break The Chains” mixes together dirty southern rock breakdowns with thrash riffs and vocalist Josh has a set of pipes like Corey Taylor, going from guttural screams to clean melodies in an instant. Sounding like a cross between Slipknot, KoRn, Slayer and Waking The Cadaver, Kontraku really have something amazing going on here.

”No Tomorrow” uses much cleaner vocals, in comparison to Corey Taylor the first track sounds like Slipknot whereas this is more like Stone Sour. This band really delivers an impact when you listen to them, its more like blunt force trauma than a simple listen.

Final track “Separate” has an almost Sepultura vibe to it, with some guttural Max Cavalera vocals (none of this cookie monster vocals rubbish) and an incessantly pounding guitar riff that drills into your skull and fills the hole with some meaty metal. Kontraku are something quite special, and with an album coming out later this year, I know I can’t wait to hear more of this lot!
