Famous X

Review John Lewins

The Famous X are the brainchild of Sted who takes care of everything except vocals on this demo release. Originally intended as an instrumental only side project of Sted's involvement as guitarist in Highlord, he brought Highlord's vocalist Andrea onboard when these songs took shape.

For a home studio recording the finished product is quite polished and the three tracks here are up-tempo power metal in a similar vein to the likes of vintage Megadeth or Armored Saint but with an updated and modern sound. From powerful instrumental opener “Intro – A Perfect Fiasco” to the Max Payne influenced “Bullet Time” The Famous X demonstrate an ear for a riff and melody that should stand them in good stead (no pun intended!) if they decide to expand on this demo and release more formal product in the future.

It's fair to say that you can tell the main protagonist here is a guitar player as there are plenty of lead fills and riffs all over the three tracks, especially “The Famous X” but Sted applies himself to drums and bass with equal aplomb, some of his double bass drum work is especially good for a guitarist, and the tracks never come across as merely a vehicle for his guitar playing prowess. Definitely one to watch.
