Explosives For Her Majesty - Slogan Formula

Review John Consterdine

Explosives For Her Majesty is the brain child of one Kallie Marie with basically composed and produced this entire EP on her own with the only exception being that Mark and Andy of Nerve Engine/Lifescreen fame helped out with guitars, bass, vocals and drums.

With a name like Explosives For Her Majesty you’d probably think this was some screamo/hardcore band along the lines of The Devil Wears Prada or I Killed The Prom Queen, well that’s where you’d be wrong! EFHM are like a hybrid of all things dark and alternative, taking Skinny Puppy’s abrasive sound, Trent Reznor’s creativity, Maynard James Keenan style lyrics and topped off with the catchiness of Mindless Self Indulgence and KMFDM. Opening track “Frayed” would make a perfect instrumental on any Rob Zombie album, fusing together dance beats and a constantly evolving soundtrack of beeps, bleeps, bongs and squeaks whereas “Model Citizen” is like the classic dance track “Popcorn”, but stretched out and mutilated then layered with some abrasive Reznor style vocals.  It almost sounds like the Pet Shop Boys on ecstasy.

The title track “Slogan Formula” again sounds like something Nine Inch Nails fans have been dreaming of since “The Downward Spiral”, dark and mysterious but also epic and ambient. “God Help Us All” lyrically sounds like NIN, with Mark from Lifescreen showing a very different sound to his vocals, layered over some cracking drum and bass as well as some brain melting synths and loops. Finally “UnOpen Arms” starts off in a My Dying Bride, gothic trance before turning into an anima lifting musical feast. If like me you’re a big fan of Tool, Nine Inch Nails and hard alternative and industrial in general then EFHM may be right up your street.
