Dannie Damien
Review Paul Williams
|
Dannie Damien is an Italian guitarist and songwriter who has self-produced and released a debut solo album after various unsuccessful stints in different bands. All of the songs are written by Damien, who also handles vocal duties, bass and drum programming. It is harsh to be critical of someone who has obvious talent and has put so much effort into fulfilling a lifelong dream, but in my opinion this release is a mistake. Firstly, the sound quality is poor, which does the songs absolutely no favours and, as Damien himself admits in his self-written press blurb, he had no intention of singing on the album and it’s not difficult to see why, as again his vocals very much detract from the songs. Having said the above, Damien is certainly a songwriter of some merit with an ear for the melodic and if you can look beyond the poor sound and vocals, the songs themselves are quite catchy and with proper professional production and a decent vocalist, would be well worth listening to. Damien’s guitar playing is also very good, showing a full range of talents in some decent riffs, solos and hooks which very much tell me that his future lies as a guitar player within a band - one he can also contribute writing duties to as well. In that regard, if this release catches the attention of a band in need of just such an individual, then it will be deemed a success. As a standalone product, however, it sounds way too much like what it is…a home recorded demo. The effort alone deserves reward and I for one hope Dannie Damien gets the break his talent surely merits. Contact: www.myspace.com/danniedamienrock |
