Dan Sindel

Review Al Hey

For anyone who thinks guitar music is predictable and that it can’t go anywhere new one listen to the latest musical effort from American guitar player Dan Sindel will force you to think again. The “Marching In Namm 2008 Sampler” is a six track mini album released to generate interest in Dan’s forthcoming full-length release entitled “Marching In-A Tribute To The March King John Philip Sousa”. It will be Dan's debut album and is set to form part of his “Symphonic Guitars” concept whereby Dan transposes and transcribes compositions to fit the guitars tonal range.

The sampler features three Philip Sousa tracks namely “The Washington Post”, ”Semper Fi” and finally “The Liberty Bell” and rounding out the release are three pieces of music by Handel taken from The Messiah these being “Overture”,” He Shall Feed His Flock” and “Hallelujah”. I have to be honest and say Dan’s music stopped me in my tracks somewhat as I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Each Philip Sousa song has been painstakingly taken apart and rebuilt for guitar. When I say taken apart I mean dissected down to every note and nuance resulting in something totally unique and individual. One has to admire the tenacity  as Sindel must have poured hours into the project and has to be given much deserved praise for seeing the project through to a conclusion. He must have the patience of a saint and must be also a little bit crazy as listening to this makes you wonder just how many guitar layers he had to put down to achieve the end result.

Fittingly “The Liberty Bell” was the theme to Monty Pythons Flying Circus and I’m sure Dan won’t mind me saying he would be a perfect candidate to join that team of demented geniuses. “The Messiah” is one of the greatest pieces of classical music ever written and once again over the three pieces that Dan features I couldn’t help thinking “just how did he have the will power to put this down”. Being a musician involves not just being creative but also having vision and on this sampler Sindel shows that he is focused and determined to see his vision through to fruition and to that end I have to congratulate him on a job well done. You can only wonder what is lined up for the future but if he gets to read this can I request “Mars” by Holst from The Planet Suite and maybe “Arrival Of the Queen Of Sheba” by G.F Handel.
