The Amber Brooke Band

Review Al Hey

The Amber Brooke Band are a five-piece outfit hailing from America fronted by eighteen-year-old singer/songwriter Amber Brooke. One glance at her biography and a few minutes spent on her MySpace  site shows a very motivated individual who has already clocked up a lot of performance experience through appearances in commercials, movies and doing voiceovers. Currently she is attending Georgia State University on the Hope Scholarship majoring in English with an emphasis on Creative Writing.

She first started to get her band together when she was 16 and somehow, amongst all her college and television work, she has found time to record and release under her own name an album entitled “Destructive Behaviour”. The album features twelve tracks (one of which is a cover of Led Zeppelins Immigrant Song). Submitted via MusicSubmit.com what we have here is a three-track sampler of the album which ably demonstrates that Amber, and her band, are very talented individuals and each track shows a different flavour.

Opening number “Hit The Ground” has one of the coolest guitar riffs I have heard in a long while, a wonderfully unsettling intervallic descending series of notes that sounds better on each listen. The song has a lumbering gait and bristles with attitude and, moving everything along with purpose, is some very muscular drumming from Nathan Beazeale. Amber is less than half the age of this reviewer so when I say she reminds me of a young Sass Jordan it may not mean a great deal (but believe me it’s a huge compliment).

Next up is “Rusty Nail” which is a dark and funky number. There are some very obvious Red Hot Chilli Peppers vibe coming through and hence it came as no surprise to see them as one of her influences Last of the three tracks is “Heavy” which starts out very Sheryl Crow like. The vocal phrasing is exactly the way Crow would approach things but, as the song progresses, it morphs more into Alannis Morrisette territory with once again a dash of Sass Jordan.

The enjoyable thing about these songs is the quality of the writing and the creative musicianship, especially from guitaristd William Boos and Michael Bass. Vocally Brooke is equally as strong with a full and warm timbre to her vocal. As mentioned earlier these tracks are culled from her bands debut release “Destructive Behaviour” and if you want to hear what other tracks on the album sound like you can head over to CD Baby where there are samples from every track.

Without a doubt Amber and her band are a very promising prospect and if they can keep up the quality song writing they will keep impressing listeners and building a fan base without any difficulty.
