Jeff Pilson/War & Peace Extend Deal With Z Records

Jeff Pilson's WAR & PEACE have extended their relationship with Z Records by a further two albums. Jeff made the following statement concerning the contract extension:

"Just want to say that War and Peace is extremely excited about extending their contract with Z Records to include 2 releases for next year. The first is a live record to be recorded at the Cavern Club in Liverpool during September's Z Rock Festival. Then a studio record will be released sometime later in the year. We're feeling so energized being on a label that is completely supportive and stands behind this music. The live band was formed originally to play the Z Rock Festival, and now it's taken on a life of its' own. It's almost impossible to find labels that are into it for the music anymore, which is why Z Records is a perfect home for us"

War & Peace headline the  Z Rock Festival, which is to be held at The Cavern Club in Liverpool on September 19th. The band then go on to play London Camden Underworld on 20th September.

In further Z Rocks news, the line up has been extended and will now also include Hodson, who recently released their debut album 'This Strange World' through Frontiers. A review of the album can be seen here

Lunatica

Frontiers Records is very proud to announce the signing of the new Symphonic Metal sensation Lunatica for the worldwide release of their second album "Fables & Dreams"!

Lunatica is a Swiss band put up by drummer Sandro D’Incau and keyboard player Alex Seiberl during the winter of 1998. After a long search for a lead singer, in 2001 the band found Andrea Datwyler. With her beautiful voice, she has given something special to the songs and she immediately recorded the lead vocals for the debut album "Atlantis".

"Atlantis" has been very successful and Lunatica was booked for many concerts and festivals. Playing at Metaldayz festival (the biggest metal open air festival in Switzerland), Lunatica was elected "best newcomer band" and gained a lot of new fans.

For the second album "Fables & Dreams", Lunatica worked together with the successful producer Sascha Paeth (Rhapsody, Kamelot, Angra, After Forever, Edguy and Heavens Gate). He was able to create the powerful production Lunatica desired.

The band will definitely please all the fans of such bands as Kamelot, Nightwish and Royal Hunt with a very personal interpretation of a symphonic and melodic metal sound.

The final track listing of "Fables & Dreams" will include the following songs:
The Search Goes On; Avalon; Elements; Fable of Dreams; Still Believe; The Spell; The Neverending Story; Hymn; Silent Scream; A Little Moment Of Desperation.

"Fables & Dreams" will be released on Frontiers Records on October 18th 2004, while the Japanese release will happen on Marquee / Avalon.

James Christian is The Man

Frontiers Records is pleased to announce all details for the release of the new James Christian solo album entitled "Meet The Man".

James Christian is best known as singer and songwriter for House of Lords. With them, he sung on four studio albums including the most recent "The Power & The Myth". He has also built during the years a fine reputation as a songwriter and producer in his own right.

His first solo album entitled "Rude Awakening" was originally released in 1994 (later reissued on Frontiers Records with 6 bonus tracks) and included some of his best collaborations with such writers as Mark Baker (Signal), Bruce Gowdy (Unruly Child), Bob Marlette, Mike Slamer (Streets) and Steve DeMarchi & Freddy Curci from Alias. This album is still nowadays regarded as a delight for any lover of first class AOR.

After the successful reunion album with House of Lords, Christian wanted to make a come-back also as a solo artist in a more traditional melodic rock vein.

To do so he chose the best possible set of songs from his repertoire that could make up an amazing new album. The result can be heard on "Meet The Man": a classy melodic rock CD that includes song writing contributions from his House of Lords band mates Chuck Wright and Lanny Cordola ("After The Love Has Gone"; "Hold Back The Night"); the songwriter of one of House Of Lords' biggest hits "Love Don't Lie", Stan Bush (who offered "Strong Enough" to the album) and, of course, songs from the late Judithe Randall (Mark Free, Khymera, FM, Starship etc.), James Christian's artistic mentor.

The final track listing will include the following songs: After The Love Is Gone; Know You In The Dark; Surrender Your Love; Meet The Man; End Of Time; Love Looked Into My Life; Leave Well Enough Alone; Strong Enough; You Should Be Blue (All I Could Feel Was Blue); Circle of Tears; Hold Back The Night

The release date has been set for October 18th 2004 on Frontiers Records, while the Japanese release will be handled via Nippon Crown.

In 1995 „Zenology“ was released which was a huge success: the album reached the Japanese album charts. „Listen To The Light“ was completed and released in 1998 followed by chart entries: #26 in the Japanese album charts, # 6 in Foreign Music Charts and # 2 in Rock Music Charts. Sum 41

Sum 41 will release their new album, which they have named 'Chuck' through island records on October 11th. The CD, the third release from the band, was produced by Greig Nori and mixed by Andy Wallace and Tom Lord-Alge.

The name 'Chuck' comes from the band's trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo in May to shoot a documentary (with the non-profit group War Child Canada) about the impact of the longstanding civil war on the nation. Although the band arrived during a time of cease-fire, while there they encountered bombs and gunfire. The violence continued, and the band hid in a hotel bathroom for safety. A U.N. representative named Chuck Pelletier made an evacuation plan. He herded the band into the lobby, then ran with them through gunfire to an armoured tank and eventually to safety. And that is the genesis of the title 'CHUCK.'
Songs set for inclusion on the CD include
No Reason," "Pieces," "Some Say," "Welcome to Hell" and "88."

Carbon 13: A New British Rock Label

Carbon 13 is an exciting new label formed out of the frustration of witnessing too many "studio bands" release sub-standard product which sounds like it has been recorded by individuals rather than by a live, breathing band . The label is headed up by musicians Graham Woodcock (The Quest) and Andy Bramhall with significant input from Producer and Engineering guru Pete Coleman. These names (especially Pete Coleman) will be familiar due to the exhaustive list of credits coming out of our leading edge studio, Mastertone Sound.

Carbon 13 believe in quality ROCK music that can only be really appreciated when coming from the crafted hard work that only a real band can generate. We aren't limited to any specific sub-genres but like to think that there are plenty of bands making quality music that need to be given a chance to let the wider public appreciate their hard work and craftsmanship.

All signings to Carbon 13 will be given the opportunity to record and / or mix their work in our amazing, vibed studio. There will be no "clock watching" or corner cutting. We want every album to be the product of a relaxed band giving their best performance .... that's when something special happens in our opinion. Pete Coleman will be on hand to deliver the goods and  give every project the benefit of his experience. In fact, experience doesn't seem to be an adequate word to describe Pete's pedigree. Anyone who has recorded Angus Young of AC/DC doesn't get that gig by being just ordinary.

Huge drums and guitars form the backbone of any powerful ROCK sound. We have the studio and the ability to deliver world-beating quality recordings that are the perfect platform for some killer vocals. Blend all this with great melodies and song arrangements and the final results will speak for themselves . . . quality with a capital Q.

Carbon 13 are currently looking for artists to join our exciting new roster. Why don’t you check us out?  www.carbon13.co.uk

www.totalrock.com and the show is Midnight Dynamite with Sleazy H."

Kick Axe

Larry Gillstrom, guitarist with Canadian band Kick Axe, who release a new album entitled 'IV' through MTM Music on September 20th has posted the following on the record company website in relation to the band's reformation and the new album:

"So why now. why are we reuniting at this particular point in time? Quite simply, it was not possible to do so until now. Kick Axe was forced to disband in the late 1980's due to financial and legal reasons. We all remained close, but the members went off in different directions. Then in early 2002, we all found ourselves back in Vancouver out for dinner together. We talked about reuniting and agreed it was time to deal with some unfinished business.

Some people ask me why George isn't on this album. It would have been great if George could have performed on the album, and I know he would have liked to, but the timing wasn't right for him and he had other long-term commitments. We still remain in contact with George and he was one of the first people to get a pre-release copy of the new album.

It may seem a bit strange for us to say that we are all original Kick Axe members, since Gary Langen has replaced George Criston in this incarnation of the band. But it was Gary, Vic and I that started Kick Axe back in the 70's and Gary was the singer and drummer for many years before personal reasons forced him to leave the group. Unfortunately for Gary, that was just prior to our first record deal and George ended up being the first Kick Axe singer on record. The great thing about this formation of the group is that we've all known each other for at least three decades and feel very comfortable with each other both on and off stage.

This is the first album where the songs were not written while the band was on the road. On the first three albums, the whole band always got together in someone's hotel room and we wrote the songs together. On this album, individual members brought songs to the project that had been written prior to the reunion. There are also several new songs that are collaborations between two or more members of the band, and we also collaborated with a couple of outside artists (Laurel Aura and Floyd Ray)

The songs on "Kick Axe IV" are a little more serious and melodic than on our previous albums. I guess that's because we are older and wiser now. Well . at least we are older. Several of the new songs were written about real life experiences. "Rockin Daze" is a song about the band's demise in the late 80's. "Consolation" and "Turn to Stone" are songs about moments of pain and grief. But there are also light-hearted songs like "Slip Inside My Dream" and "Rock n Roll Dog". We produced the album with the guitars loud in the mix, which is the way we have always been live. I think the whole record has a very live feel to it.

At first we weren't sure if we would tour live for this new album, but as we neared the end of production on the album, we felt a growing desire to get out and perform again.
We're going to do our first live show in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. This is the city where most of us were born and raised. As soon as we announced the show, we had all the old crew calling us up offering to do the show with us. We expect it to be a blast!

We've had a lot of people contact us trying to find a copy of "Rock The World" on CD. I hear copies are selling on ebay for $100+. It's our intention to re-issue the "Rock The World" CD in early 2005. There will be new cover art, because the original cover art was forced on us by our record company at the time. They rejected our initial cover, and created one without our input while we were on tour. We've never really liked that cover and now we have a chance to put things right. That will also leave the original "Rock The World" CD as the unique collector's item that it is.

One of the things that really inspired us to reform was the continuous fan-mail we received over the years, which increased dramatically with the re-issue of the Vices and Welcome to the Club albums. And we were also encouraged by the numerous fan web sites that appeared, especially the one created by Vlado from the Czech Republic

Thunder

The following update has just been released from the Thunder camp.

"The recording of the new Thunder album is now well a truly underway.  The as yet untitled record is being produced by Luke and the engineer is Rupert Coulson (with some additional knob twiddling from our very own Ben).
Recording has been under way since the beginning of June, stopping and starting to write more songs and play some festivals in Europe and the UK.
The band hope to have it all done by the end of August, with a single release in November (to coincide with the Deep Purple U.K. arena tour) and the full album to follow in the spring of 2005.
Some of the new tunes set to be included are as follows:
I Love You More Than Rock 'n' Roll - A very catchy rocker, as anyone who's seen the band perform over the summer will already know!  Currently favourite for the first single...
I'm Dreaming Again - Aerosmith style power ballad.
Fade Into The Sun - Very dramatic and up tempo.
Monkey See, Monkey Do - Luke in Jimmy Page mode, damning indictment of record labels, all vitriol and misery (in the best possible way).
You Can't Keep A Good Man Down - ROCK!!
Together Or Apart - The fans are going to love this one!  The natural successor to Love Walked In!?!?
A Fatal Kiss - co-written with Russ Ballard.
More news as and when"... www.thunderonline.co.uk

Uli Jon Roth

Guitar legend Uli Jon Roth is finally returning to the States after an absence of 19 years. News of the tour was already spreading like wildfire among the many admirers of one of the last great and original guitar heroes before the tour was even announced.

Best known for his ground-breaking work with the German hard rock band SCORPIONS, of which he was an original founding member, the enigmatic multi-talent is at long last embarking on a US tour, which will continue through September.

The long-awaited tour will start in Los Angeles at the House of Blues on August 26th and ends in Mexico, where Roth is head-lining shows with special guests. In the States U.J.R. is sharing the bill with the MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP.

Roth has often been hailed as a true genius on the guitar, always stoutly defying the conventions of the music industry and forging his own way.  It is virtually impossible to categorize his output which is wide ranging from classic rock to full scale symphonic works with orchestras.

Since his time with the SCORPIONS and his own group ELECTRIC SUN, U.J.R. has persistently developed his unique playing style which earned him the reputation of being one of the most influential and greatest guitarists of our time.  Always one to push the envelope on the guitar as well as in his symphonic compositions, Uli is seen by many as a musical trend setter who is well ahead of his time. He has been an inspiration to artists world-wide, influencing generations of younger players as well as his peers.

His show will include material from all periods of his career including a new and amazing version of his SCORPIONS song ³The Sails of Charon², which Roth has just recorded with a symphony orchestra. The song features LIZ VANDALL on vocals.  Furthermore Uli¹s set will feature parts of his latest release the critically-acclaimed ³METAMORPHOSIS OF THE SEASONS², as well as material from
each of his ELECTRIC SUN albums.

The format of Uli¹s set is innovative. He will be playing his legendary seven-string Sky Guitar, an instrument he designed himself, which enables him to play a full six-octave range.  He will also perform in front of a cinemascope screen with just two other musicians on stage. The screen will show spectacular footage directed by the man himself, which often features the members of his own classical SKY ORCHESTRA as well as other musicians with whom Roth interacts live. The result is a perfectly sounding trip through Space and Time.

Roth has recently toured this format in Europe with great success and is very much looking forward to touring in the US again.

Now & Then Update

ORPHAN PROJECT
===============
Now And Then is extremely proud to be able to announce the signing of the most exciting new progressive rock band in recent years.....Orphan Project.   The band's beginnings stretch back to November of 2001 when singer/lyricist Shane Lankford approached John Wenger (guitars, keyboards and music) with an idea to write a concept album about physical and spiritual adoption. After a few months of waiting, John said yes and the process began to create a soundscape that could handle the lyrical depth of what Shane wanted to, and in alot of ways, needed to get out. Musically the major influences are Kansas, Spock`s Beard, Yes, Peter Gabriel, Dream Theater, Whiteheart and quality music in general.
Shane asked good friends, guitarist Chris Maggitti, drummer Nathan Grant, violinist Cindy King, and bassist Jason Chaillou to play in the studio on the cd and John gathered bassist Colin McGough, cellist Ben Hardesty. Together with the incredible leadership of John Grant and Tony Correlli they recorded "Orphan Found" during April- June '03.
A child of adoptive parents, Shane found his way into his first family in July of 1971. Growing up in a family as an adoptee left Shane with the burning question "In whom do I find my identity?" Spurred on by his love of music, Shane explored these questions while performing with several bands including About A Day. With his characteristic exuberance and "everyman" qualities, Shane contributed thought provoking, deep lyrics that were accessible to all audiences.
In his latest project, Shane explores the topic of adoption from his very personal experience. Elements of longing for acceptance, desire to establish an identity, coupled with a real sense of peace that comes only from above, pervade the new lyrical verse entitled "Orphan Found". The depth of feeling and the joy of this story carry you from beginning to end of this amazing piece. He aims to make you laugh, break your heart, and let you take a glimpse of the pure joy that he has found in his search for his true Father.
As soon as the deal with Now And Then was inked, Orphan Project set about extensively re-recording and completely remixing the album, with the results taking it to an even higher level than was already apparent.
Media reaction has been universally positive, with Nick Shilton of Classic Rock magazine describing it as "Probably the most exciting debut album from a US band since Spock`s Beard`s "The Light" back in 1995. Yes, it's that good. Imagine a mix of prime Kansas, latter day Asia and Dream Theater at their most commercial."
The album will be released in September and there are already plans afoot to bring the band over to Europe for some showcase events.

MILLENIUM
==========
The bands long awaited "Jericho" CD is released now in parts of Europe. The reviews in the metal press have been very encouraging so far.
Fireworks Magazine - "The hooks aren’t always that obvious, especially on the less commercial tracks like ‘Heresy’ and ‘Morning Star’, but they’re like looking at magic eye pictures, once you’ve seen it then you can’t not see it. There are blazing guitar parts everywhere, weaving in and out of each other with some bizarre runs and unconventional scales, and the soaring vocals of Todd Plant are refreshingly familiar.
The attractions of the gloriously catchy and mid-paced ‘My War’ and ‘Wheel Of Fortune’ are a little more obvious, while ‘Above This World’ and ‘Let There Be Light’ are high energy work-outs with at least one foot rooted in traditional hard rock. However, the monumental ‘Burning Again’ is the undoubted highlight, a complete atmospheric tour-de-force on which Todd Plant is simply awesome, it’s part Triumph’s ‘Just A Game’ and part Queensryche’s ‘Roads To Madness’.

Thursday August 5th

Tyketto/Jeff Scott Soto

Hot off the press from the Melodicrock.com noticeboard and courtesy of Kieran Dargan. Jeff Scott Soto will be appearing with Tyketto on two of the shows in November. The dates are on November 5th at Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall & November 6th at Belfast Empire. A copy of the full post is shown below:

"Well, how strange things happen on the back of a conversation. Having seen the Tyketto/JSS clash on Nov 5th, we wondered exactly what to do about it. Anyway, a few phone calls later, a bit of collusion between the Tyketto and JSS camps we have come up with a plan.
Jeff has very graciously agreed to become part of the Tyketto tour for a few nights. Jeff and his band will slot in to the line up for the following shows:

Friday November 5th : Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall
Tyketto
Jeff Scott Soto (full band show )
Deadline
Teer
Booking :www.wolvescivic.co.uk

Saturday Nov 6th: The Empire , Belfast
Tyketto
Jeff Scott Soto(full band show)
Deadline
Teer
Booking :
www.ticketmaster.ie

Now here's the best part: there will be NO PRICE INCREASE on tickets to these shows. If you already have a ticket , then you are getting some serious value for money. If you haven't got your tickets yet, then do so as soon as you can. The Belfast show is selling like wildfire (yup seriously folks......almost half full as I write this) No doubt the addition of JSS to the bill will only increase demand even further.
Wolverhampton is also selling well and once again there is NO INCREASE on the ticket price despite Jeff's addition to the bill. I would ask that once again you purchase your tickets early and come out and support these shows. There is a solid commitment from everybody involved to bring you the best show possible and we would hope you will agree. Now all we need is for you to support it. Many thanks to Tyketto, Jeff, Frank, Davy Warren, Deadline and Teer for making this happen. Look forward to seeing everybody on the road.
Cheers
Kieran"

Jeff will likely be adding further dates to his UK tour and these will be posted as they become confirmed.

Monday  August 2nd

Well its the beginning of a new month, and it promises to be quite a month in terms of new releases. On August 30th we have new albums hitting the shops from Danny Vaughn with the 'From The Inside' project, Magnum with Brand New Morning and Dio with 'Master Of The Moon'. Add to this releases by Adam Bomb, Papa Roach and Saliva to name but a few and August will be a heavy month on the wallet on the CD buying front. On the upside there aren't too many tours going on, as August is traditionally the month of the festival, however Dio will be playing the UK this month so look out for a review of the Nottingham show in the coming weeks.

On second thoughts after witnessing the return of Twisted Sister to the UK at a packed and sweaty Astoria last night  I am glad I have a little bit of recovery time. Hot, balmy nights may make for good festivals but they sure as hell make club and theatre gigs uncomfortable... Look for a review of the Twisted Sister show in the next couple of days.

Watch out also for upcoming reviews of new albums by Ten (Return To Evermore) and Hodson (This Strange World)

In the meantime the new UK Rock Charts have been uploaded and can be viewed here. Breed 77 hit the number 1 in the Rock Singles Chart with the second single from their 'Cultura' album in the shape of 'World's On Fire', although this time they don't manage to crack the Top 40 singles chart as well. On the albums front the Red Hot Chilli Peppers hit number 1 in both the Rock Charts and the Top 40 as a whole with their live set recorded in Hyde park earlier this year.
