You have to hand it to one:day:life. Not only have they constructed their own website and booked all their own gigs, they have also written, recorded, engineered, mixed and produced this debut themselves. And no, I’m not going to say that it shows! This Suffolk three-piece, despite their undoubted hard work and proficiency as musicians, have bigger questions to answer, notably their choice to play sub-four-minute punk-pop along the lines of Busted, McFly, Blink182, Paramore and Fall Out Boy, and its execution therein. From opening salvo “Caught in the Crossfire” to the stating-the-bleedin’-obvious “This Is How It Ends”, vocalist Max Shelley’s vocals are thin and wispy, which could be forgiven over some balls-out rock, but cohorts Kevin Abbot (drums) and Dan Probert (guitar) don’t provide the gusto needed to raise this above angsty teen-fodder. Points have to be awarded to the boys, however for at least trying something different by adding a choir to “Caffeine”, but when a choral interlude becomes a major point of interest and a break in an otherwise monotonous album, you know it my be time rescind those points and to hit the off button. one:day:life are currently in the middle of a tour of schools in the Midlands, which may be a stroke of marketing genius as this is the only place this kind of music can appeal.
