Suburban Noise
Rating - 8/10

Listening to “Insomnia” you can see that (hed) p.e. came along in the Nu Metal wave but now they have taken said genre and ripped it to shreds. They have created their own genre by fusing hip-hop, metal, 70's punk rock and reggae together, creating their own unique sound, “G-Punk”. Insomnia is somewhat of a concept album that takes listeners on a journey of self realization and discovery into the social situation of the planet. It is an infectious collection of songs that take a sledgehammer to American foreign policy and the Iraq war.To give you an idea of what the album is like, “Game Over” sounds like System Of A Down jamming with House Of Pain. However it is followed by “Haebus” which is a stripped down punk track similar to Rancid or the Misfits. According to frontman Jahred, "We're not afraid to punch you in the throat with one song and then get you stoned with the next". “Tienanman Squared” takes the winning (hed) p.e. formula to a new level and is by far the best track on the album. “Children” is an interesting track as it is a cover of Buffalo Springfield's “For What It's Worth”. However, they have pulled it off very well, unlike a lot of covers that surface these days which sound too much like the original. Though the less said about “Mirrorballin” the better - you'll have to listen to it yourself to see why! All in all Insomnia is a very varied album, it’s extreme, yet serene and it’s bloody good fun! Even if you're not particularly keen on rap you should still check out (hed) p.e. because they're not just a rap band, they're not just a metal band either and they're certainly not just a punk band. They are a well oiled musical machine! Unlike all the Nu Metal acts that surfaced in the nineties, (hed) p.e. are sticking to their guns and staying out of the mainstream spotlight, constantly pushing the boundaries of music. We all need some hed in our lives! |
