Zion is the latest vehicle to bring us the brilliant voice of Freddy Curci, best known for his work with Alias and Sheriff. From the opening growing keyboard intro to “All It Takes Is A Minute”, you just know that this is going to be a melodic / AOR fan’s dream. Well, I’m happy to report that initial appearances are not deceptive and the quality is maintained throughout the entire album. Fans of classics like Shadow King and Diving For Pearls are gonna love this !!! Curci is on top form throughout a series of superbly crafted songs he either wrote himself or in collaboration with the likes of Jeff Paris, Steve DeMarchi, Marc Ribler and Bob Marlette to name but a few. Not content with writing and singing everything, he also produced the vast majority of the album alone, co-producing the remaining three tracks with Frontiers golden boy Fabrizio V. Zee Grossi. And if that wasn’t enough, the ridiculously multi-talented Mr Curci also contributed drums, bass, guitar and piano organ along the way. Don’t you just hate some people !!!!!!! I really hope that this album sells well because we need people as good as Freddy Curci in the melodic rock scene. It would also be great if he could get Zion on the road – I would personally love to see him at a future edition of something such as Firefest, whose fans appreciate this type of music so much. In terms of favourite tracks, I think the more ballad-like “I’m Running Home” encapsulates Curci’s vocal ability to perfection, whilst “Everyone’s Watching” shows his ability to belt out a rockier number when the need arises, whilst “The Sky Is Falling” is short in length but big on quality, “The Devil’s Dance” is superb and “Who Do You Think You Are” is melodic rock at its finest. The album is released on December 8th on Frontiers and I heartily recommend that all melodic rock fans get your reservations in early, as this is one of the best releases of the year in this category, without question. |
