And now for something completely different! Never has an album been more aptly named, Caledescope has more influences in one song than most album have over their entire length. The songs are almost prog pop, prog done in 5 minutes or less and amongst the influences I can detect are ELO, Kansas, Queensryche, Yes, ELP, the Beatles, Sparks and a massive Queen influence. If all these bands got together and jammed with Dream Theater you would get an album some were near but not as good as this! I’m not even going to try and do a track by track as they are all so different and even within each track the mood can change in a split second from full on metal riffery to ELO style vocal harmony. The only really straightforward track on offer is track no. four, 'Take Me Home', which is a ballad style track that reminds me of Cat Stevens (see what I mean yet more influences) and this could be a big hit! The musicianship ion display is second to none. Benny Jansson - guitars/vocals proves to be amazing, playing any style you can name and fitting into the songs perfectly - and Göran Edman spent over two years on his vocals and it sound like it. One minute sounding like Freddie Mercury, the next James Labrie and any other vocalist you may care to mention as the song demands, stunning! The band and record company should be congratulated on this excellent release wich is certainly one for all you prog fans out there and if you like Dream Thetaer or Goran’ Khrama project from a few years ago should give it a listen. |
