Wired Desire - Barely Illegal

Wired Desire

Rating - 8.5/10

Review Dave McKenzie

Wired Desire are a quintet of 20 year olds from Glasgow that have already made an impact on this reviewer in 2008, when I caught them live, supporting  Nazareth on the UK leg of their 40th Anniversary tour. At the Academy in Newcastle, Wired Desire’s performance was fast, furious and in your face, resulting in a great reaction from the crowd. It also led me to say in the gig review that these young upstarts had the material to carry off such a strutting display and from the evidence of their debut EP release “Barely Illegal”, I’m certainly sticking by that comment.

For a start the EP has a great title, is neatly packaged and the four tracks demonstrate all the energy and commitment I saw from them on stage,  the dominating theme being the hard drinking, fast living Rock ‘N Roll lifestyle. It’s a theme that may have been covered before but the over-riding feeling you get on first listening to the EP is Guns ‘N’ Roses meets AC/DC and Motley Crue for a damn good night out in Glasgow.

The quality of the delivery is apparent immediately from the rolling drum and wailing guitar intro of “No One Sleeps”, which combine well with the growling vocals of Kieren Daly.  “The Hard Stuff” follows and is probably the strongest of the four tracks, with some nice guitar work building out of the simple opening rhythm section. The remaining tracks “Damn Hard” and “Ride” are straight forward, driving rockers that keep you interested and should be played really loud for best effect. Anyone who recently witnessed Aussie band Airbourne live and enjoy their back to basics, no nonsense approach should also check out this EP.
