Whitesnake - Live In The Still Of The Night
Rating - 8/10

One advantage of being ill and away from work is the opportunity to catch up with all of those albums and DVDs you've been meaning to spend time with but just never had the chance. Trousersnake were an early influence on this rocker and I own all the albums in some shape or form and have seen the band several times over the years, the last time being on the last hurrah tour for the vastly underrated Restless Heart album. Coverdale returned to action with this particular line up of Whitesnake if memory serves in 2002/3 for one of those 'nice' package tours that criss crosses the States during the summer months before landing back in Blighty to head up the second Monsters of Rock arena shows. One thing that is certain though is that all the time spent out on the road in recent times has certainly allowed this band of American all stars to "burn" their way through an excellent set that is only spoilt by the extended solos and the crucifixion of 'Don’t Break My Heart Again' but as this is an American version of the band and Whitesnake only became big in America with the seminal 1987 album this can be excused! Coverdale vocals are much improved from more recent encounters this reviewer has had with the man whereas the twin guitar slingers, Messers Beach and Aldrich excel, even if Beach is a bit too widdley at times. Aldrich on the other hand is more than adept at the bluesy style Whitesnake requires, which is unsurprising really as his Burning Rain CDs are very bluesy and themselves sound a lot like Whitesnake anyway. All in all a great DVD with some truly excellent camera work and direction putting the veiwer right in the front seat at London's Hammersmith Apollo where this was filmed, but why does only half the show appear on CD?. Now to my rant on ticket prices, though this excellently packaged set retails for around £18:00 which you can watch over and over again yet to see the band live later this year will cost £30.00 ahead plus - explain that anyone |
