Whisper X - Warside

Rating - 8/10

Review Al Hay

Whisper-X formed at the beginning of 2003 and in 2006 a stable line-up was secured featuring Cedric (drums), Thomas (vocals), Vincent (guitar) and Ferid (bass).

The band has built a solid reputation on the Lyon metal scene and other regions of France (Reims, Saint Etienne, Dijon and Thiers). Through perseverance and hard work the band secured live slots alongside “Decapitated” and “Gorerotted” as well as some of the biggest names on the French metal scene such as “Dagoba”, ”Watcha” and “No Return”.

Whilst the band had made many demo recordings it was decided in 2006 that they should finally record their first album. Under the supervision of Mickael Valesi (Furia) the band holed up at Sonovore Studios and finally emerged with their album “Warside”.

The album opens with the short but atmospheric “Into the Morgue”. This leads us into “Necrophobia” a track, which spirals around in uncontrollable abandon before settling into a fiendishly heavy workout. The drumming and guitars are glued together so tight you can’t see any daylight. The aggression is controlled and menacing and one is left in no doubt that one is listening to a very skilled band.

“Virus Destroy Human” is wonderfully heavy and is mixed to great effect as guitars and vocals dart around the speakers.

“No Remorse” is solid and in your face and yet has a cool bouncy groove. This is extreme metal with a nice punky vibe.

“Fire Punishment” is very intense and almost mechanical in its delivery. The drumming is top notch and there is some very cool guitar chord voicings combined with some great dark melodic moments.

“Beautiful Torture” sees the pace slowed down a notch and as a result provides the listener with one very sinister sounding track. Again the band creates some cool vibes thanks to unusual and little used harmonies. This track could almost be the soundtrack for the descent of a soul into hell.

“Mutant Generation” has a great groove. It has a marching like quality and one can imagine that this would be the music of choice for an army of orcs going into battle on Middle Earth.

“Ultim(H)ate” is pure pent up anger and aggression. The drums and guitars lock horns and charge into the head of the listener with no mercy.

“Warside” opens with an air raid siren before launching into what could just possibly be the albums most hard-hitting track. The track takes no prisoners and conjures up a mood of helplessness as one seeks a way out of the trenches.

“The End Of” is a track, which creates a wonderful sense of atmosphere and shows the excellent grasp of harmony that Vincent has.

The album has a bonus track, which comes with the title “Chapter 1”. It shows the band has a mellow side and uses acoustics and tuned drums to create an evocative and organic sounding closer to the album.

Whisper-X are a band throwing down the gauntlet into an area of metal which is very competitive but in which one senses the band could become one of the leaders. They have a great mastery of atmosphere and tension and importantly in this demanding genre are also gifted musicians. The band have now taken on a manger, web designer and sound and lighting engineer so they are showing their intent to get to the next level. The quality of this release shows that the band deserve and will reach their goal.
