The Whisky Works - In Against Your Own
Hospital Ball
Rating - 6/10
Review John Lewins

The Whisky Works are a Glasgow based quartet that dabble in angular post hardcore that will appeal to fans of Dartz or Fony. Lead track from the single “In Against Your Own” is the most immediate offering, with its throbbing, insistent bass and impassioned vocals really conveying a sense of urgency against quite an abrasive guitar sound. Instrumental “Belgium” is built around some crashing drums and a series of hypnotic guitar figures but doesn't really seem to go anywhere, it certainly doesn't conjure up images of Stella Artois or Philipe Albert, perhaps betraying my own ignorance but these were the only two Belgian references I could think of. “Spain '82” is a much more interesting track with the dynamics shifting from a sparse, bass led, verse to a raucous chorus and closes out with some squalling guitar. The Whisky Works wont be to everyone's taste due to their deliberate dissonance, but anybody who doesn't mind a bit of discordant noise would do well to check them out though. |
