I’m only writing this review to warn other perspective purchasers off this release. Under no circumstance’s waste your money on this DVD! I’ve already made my comments about the CD released simultaneously with this DVD and you can read that review here. This DVD features a slightly re-jigged song order from the CD, a pointless back stage thingy and an interview with John Wetton and Geoff Downes carried out by George who is a big over the top character, in which Wetton, in particular, looks rather uncomfortable. As for the “ performance”, it consists of the three musicians miming to backing tracking and it appears to have been dubbed by the same guy responsible for the TV series Monkey. The voices and mouth movements are so badly out of Sync it’s unreal! Wetton looks bored tit-less and to be honest it’s boring to watch with some of the strangest camera angles ever seen. There is no effort to even make it look like it's live, no microphones, no monitors, just three middle age blokes and their instruments in what looks like the old Pebble Mill At One studio. A completely wasted and utterly missed opportunity. I know from experience that these guys can pull this material off live and hence cannot understand why the didn't just book one off acoustic gig and record that. It would have looked better than this. The other thing that annoys me is that Frontiers have, the in the past, released some stunning live DVD’s. In particular the JSS Live At The Gods disc and The Seventh Key live DVD from last year, so we know that the label has the ability to produce top notch product. It wouldn't have been so bad if this was packaged with the CD, maybe then I would not have felt so cheated. However as this DVD is being sold as a stand alone item it simply does not offer VFM at all!. To quote the late great John Peel, A waste of time, talent and electricity"- in recording and in playing it back. |
