With this, their 6th album in a career spanning 18 years so far, Vomitory have released yet another uncompromising set of death metal that has its roots in the classic bands of this genre. The early work of Venom, Sodom, Slayer and Kreator all springs to mind whilst listening to Terrorize, Sodomize,Brutalize,, but for all the right reasons. The biggest change this time around comes from departure of long standing guitarist Ulf Dalegren and the decision to work with producer Rikard Löfgren (in place of long time collaborator Henrik Larsson) and this seems to have revitalized the band and added an extra dimension to the guitar sounds in particular. Take title track “Terrorize, Brutalize, Sodomize” as an example it starts off with a mid-tempo crunching riff over some relentless drumming and increases the intensity by mixing up the tempos throughout the song before ending on another mid-tempo cruncher. It's in the slower parts that Vomitory really display their power, with the faster sections sometimes actually conveying less intensity, “Flesh Passion” is a good example of this, its faster paced intro verses and outro just rushing past but when the tunes slows into the bridge the rhythm section really gets going on a chugging riff topped off with some neat melody lines. That said, on tracks like “March Into Oblivion” Vomitory come rushing out of the traps after the bass-synth led intro and proceed to rip your face off for the next five minutes with a succession of brutal riffs and incessant drums that simply cannot be ignored, the slower melody lines in the outro only serving to give you a momentary respite from the onslaught that proceeded them. Overall this is an album that I can recommend without reservation to fans of classic death metal and one which fans of newer bands such as Norther or Dark Tranquility will enjoy immensely as well. |
