The Hives - We Rule The World

Polydor

Rating - 6/10

Review John Lewins

Love them or loathe them The Hives seem to continue on in their own world regardless of what might be happening in the populace at large. With each successive album since the breakthrough compilation “Your New Favourite Band” in 2001 the band have reinvented themselves a little bit, just to keep the myth alive.

In their current guise The Hives are a sort of white funk/alt/rock outfit, borrowing equally from Bowie, The Stones and Gang Of Four (and therefore, by definition from Franz Ferdinand as well). What of this second single from “The Black And White Album” I hear you ask?

Well, if you imagine “Emotional Rescue t” era Stones mixed with a dash of “Let's Dance” period Bowie you're pretty much there. Howlin Pelle Almqvist's falsetto set against the trademark choppy guitar parts to provide a track with more than a nod to the late 70's. Quite good fun in all fairness and the Matt Helder (Arctic Monkeys) remix takes the basic track and gives it a total dance makeover as well so you can at least try to imagine the track in a different light, the standard mix works best for me though.
