From the blurb supplied I was a bit worried about this review, yet another indie rock outfit trying to carve a niche in a very crowded market place indeed. With a slight degree of trepidation I fired this CD up and ended up being pleasantly surprised.
The first track up
“I Regret” is a bit indie, a bit rock and a bit American
influenced pop/punk but it still retains distinctive British
vocals. Not bad at all for that style and enough to keep you
optimistic for the rest of the EP. Second track “Not What I
Signed Up For” has an unusual almost Ska type of feel to it
that is very melodic with a slick vocal delivery while still
retaining a degree of pop/punk influence, especially with
some of the vocal catches.
“Happier Real” has
choppy indie rock guitars that is delivered with an up beat
enthusiasm that will work well live. Next up is “Lost All
Hope” which is also the single from this EP. A very
radio friendly track it has some interesting, almost Beatles
like ,intertwining backing vocals and shows a more
sophisticated aspect than most bands of this ilk. Lastly we have “Make
Pretend” which kicks off with quiet layered vocals before
firing up into another superficially ska influenced number
before supplying a more varied musical experience with
excellent vocal delivery.
All in all this is a
very polished release that won't appeal to all rock fans and
probably not all indie fans either as it dabbles in other
sounds and styles that may confuse or alienate others.
However I like it and hopefully with a similarly slick live
ability this band could climb the very crowded ladder in
this genre.
