Despite being
dropped by their label, 679 records, after a disappointing
2nd album “News & Tributes” The Futureheads have
taken time out to reassess their situation and have come
storming back with "This Is Not The World" this time
released on the bands own label, Nul records.
3rd time around
there seems to have been a conscious shift back to the short
snappy post punk that characterised the band's self titled
debut, but with added maturity. In the main this is exactly
what the doctor ordered. Sharp riffs and incisive lyrics
abound. Only the
country stylings and Phil Spector drums of “Hard To Bear”
and the occasional nicked riff spoil this record but, even
allowing for these lapses, This Is Not The World bristles with taut
rhythms and spiky hooks that once heard are embedded in the
psyche for days.
With "This Is Not World" The Futureheads have
rediscovered their form, they may not reach the same heights
this time around as they did with their debut but, on this
showing at least, the band show that they have
the energy and ideas to keep themselves at the forefront of the UK alt-rock scene.
