The Beasts Of Bourbon - Little Animals

Alberts

Rating - 5/10

Review Freez

This is the first European release by this Aussie quintet, but judging by their references, writ large in their music, they will soon be gathering an audience. Having released six albums already in their Antipodean homeland, they have decided to release this new effort to us Brits, displaying their considerable talents.

Little Animals was recorded in just three days and falls under the considerable pedigree of Albert Productions, of AC-DC fame. The whole CD is a heavy and sleezy mix of blues and rock which positively fills the room with bar-room smoke (Not after July 1st it doesn’t. Ed.) Opening track “I Don’t Care About Nothing Anymore” has the loose swagger of early 70’s Stones, and so it goes.

Singer Tex Perkins’ voice has a bourbon (aptly) soaked gravely texture which fits  the genre perfectly. The riff are suitably “Keef n Ron” jangly but the songs themselves are a little repetitive. The more I played it, the more some songs just grate and annoy, No idea why? I found myself thinking The Black Crowes and The Strokes did a better parody and obviously made a decent career out of it. Crikey I’m getting cynical in my old age!!

Album closer “Thanks” has nice line in tongue in cheek humour which is sadly missing in the previous tracks and should, in my opinion, signify the way forward. Foe people who like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing they like!!
