My first and only contact with Terra Nova was back in 1997 at that years Gods festival and the only thing that stick’s in my mind about the band that day was the fact they looked like they had borrowed their mothers blouses to play the gig in! I remember chatting to the guitarist after the show and the lads seemed lreally likeable but, unfortunately, none of their songs gripped me. In the eight years or so since that show the band have released two further albums in Japan, whilst a best of collection, culled from these two releases reached the marketplace in Europe as 'Eye To Eye' and a side project called Aquila was also released. So, here we are in 2005 and the release of Terara Nova's new album 'Escape' and to be honest nothing much seems to have changed. Reading through the track listing featured on the CD, the titles on offer seem to serve up images of the classic rock era to the core (Long Live Rock 'N' Roll', Rock Bottom, Hold The Line!), however the reality is that Terra Nova are still purveyors of pretty predictable, safe AOR featuring a good mix of both rockers and ballads. However as in the band's live show alluded to above nothing really manages to grab this reviewers attention strongly enough to stick out as anything above the norm. In short 'Escape' proves to be simply and adequate album, with adequate songs and an adequate production job,and to be honest this is not enough given the number of albums that the consumer has the choice of in this day and age. Escape is just missing that elusive something that would impel the band above the crowd and into the major league. |
