Talula - Ripped Up And Violent
Triple X
Rating - 7/10

Talula have already managed to garner some fairly heavyweight support in their nascent career. Getting some serious exposure supporting compadres Muse on some of their arena dates last year won't have done them any harm, likewise having Paul Reeve (Muse/Razorlight ) produce this EP is certainly a coup for an upcoming band. Aside from the basic facts that each band is a three piece both hail from Devon, there's no musical comparison to be made between Muse and Talula though, with the latter trio being a far more spiky musical proposition than Matt Bellamys lot. When it comes to this EP, to quote Mealoaf "two out of three ain't bad", ballad "The Battle & The Beauty" letting the side down coming across as very formulaic and a little contrived and forced. Far better are the title track with its angular riffing and pounding drums really hitting home and "Soujourn" with its quiet/loud dynamic working well in this setting. If Talula can build on this solid introduction with an equally strong album then its not too hard to see that they certainly can be contenders in the UK alt-rock scene and this EP serves as a statement of intent in that respect, check them out, I think you'll be glad you did. |
