One look into Soilent Green’s 20 year history shows how much the group have had to endure in the way of tragedy and trauma, the death of former members and serious injuries from bus crashes included. The fact that they are still here to produce such an album as Inevitable Collapse In The Presence Of Conviction is a surprise, the fact that is sounds heavy and angry however isn’t. This is simply a brutal piece of metal that reminiscent of Entombed’s early days where they managed to merge rockier tunes with extreme vocals to good effect. Take into account also the fact that guitarist Brian Patton is from Eyehategod and it is clear where the Southern sounding guitars on the album come from. Inevitable Collapse... is an album that is happy either powering along at break neck speed or creating those slow head banging moments, such as on opener ‘Mental Acupuncture’. It is, however, with the second track, ‘Blessed In The Arms Of Servitude’ that everything comes together perfectly to create, probably, the best song on the album. Soilent Green move happily into the realms of doom with ‘Lovesick’ and ‘Superstition Aimed At One's Skull’, which has a Corrosion Of Conformity style intro and they even throw in some acoustic moments, again ‘Lovesick’ being but one example and at the start of ‘In The Same Breath’ for good measure. Overall this is an album that sounds like an angrier, heavier and faster Down although, sadly, at times the growling and the fast and furious drumming distracts from the tunes that make it such a great album in the first place. Most of the time however these excursions are but short lived, with the band dragging the songs back to those great Southern sounding riffs. With Inevitable Collapse… not only have Soilent Green given us a really awkward album title, but they have also produced a great heavy metal album, one that is sure to please anyone with an ear for some Southern infused death metal.
