Sharp End First - Songs For The Betrayed

Glasstone/Lockjaw

Rating - 4/10

Review Deano

Debut four track EP from a band who were formed a couple of years ago and who, according to the press release, have endured “seemingly endless setbacks, and extensive personal troubles.” With this in mind, I’ll try not to be too critical but this is pretty underwhelming stuff; from the lack of quality control in the press release (hint: check the grammar next time), to the CD itself.

Described as “brutal epic UK Metal” Sharp End First are a five piece that employ the twin vocal approach of Death Metal growl and melodic tones. Death Metal / Cookie Monster vocals are all well and good when they are properly executed but here, when combined with the shoddy and murky production, they fail to measure up. The four songs on offer are less than compelling, though ‘Blinded By Belief’ has a fairly memorable hook (“I don’t know many people”) that makes it slightly more interesting than the rest.

There is precious little evidence for me to recommend this release; but with the band apparently having “their hearts set on touring til they drop” perhaps they can pick up some pointers from extended roadwork and come up with some stronger material. With Metal on both sides of the Atlantic in rude health at the moment Sharp End First have a lot of ground to make up if they aspire to making any sort of an impression.

‘Songs For The Betrayed’ is released on October 23rd on Glasstone Records & Lockjaw Records.
