The Scorpions - Unbreakable One Night In Vienna (DVD)

Review - Steve Atkinson

In a follow up to my recent interview with the Scorpions main man Rudy Schenker, I’ve finally got a copy of this, the new DVD offering from the German rockers. And it’s everything I hoped it would be. Shot mainly in Vienna in June 2004, there’s 14 tracks and showcases the Scorps in all their glory. All your favourite classics are there, “Blackout”, “Big City Nights” and “The Zoo” etc and also tracks from their most recent studio release “Unbreakable”. As a Scorpions fan, it’s a fantastic watch, capturing the professionalism and raw energy of a band that has ridden the tidal wave of their success for over thirty years. If you are a fan and didn’t get to see the UK leg of the Unbreakable tour with Judas Priest, then this is the next best thing and defines the band in all their live glory.

Included as a bonus is the rockumentary called “A German Rock legend”, an in depth collection of specially shot interviews with all the members of the band and a narrated history from the early seventies to the present. The interviews with Rudy, Klaus and Matthias are all in German, which is fair enough and you will have to activate the translation section that is conducted by an American, which can sound a little cheesy in parts, but it serves it’s purpose. Good to see that the two newer members of the band, James and Pawel get a chance to put their personalities across as well.

If you already own a VHS copy of the “World Wide Live” concerts from the mid-eighties, it’s interesting to see how the band have retained their collective vibrancy and genuine love of what they do. True Rock stars, doing what they do best. And long may they continue, in truth the guys don’t look much different than they did in the early days even if Matthias’ hairline has gone the same way as mine (thanks very much Mother Nature!), this is just the most recent instalment from a band that, hopefully, still have a long career in front of them and must for all Scorpions fans, young and old.
