See You Next Tuesday - Parasite

For anyone who feels that this kind of extreme metal reached its peak somwehere between Napalm Deaths seminal “Scum” and “From Enslavement To Obliteration” back in 1987-88 then See You Next Tuesday are here to change your mind. Formed as something of a joke project a couple of years ago a quick look at the song titles shows that this is a band with a sense of humour to go with their uncompromising aural assault, not necessarily a good thing in this context however. Weighing in with fourteen tracks in a mere eighteen minutes means that it's definitely a case of blink and you've missed it in some places here. This album mixes together hyperspeed riffing with some extreme doom-dirge grooves and could even, shock horror, be classed as having melody here and there - the latter part of “Paraphilia” wouldn't be out of place on a Dark Tranquility Album for example. For the most part though atonal guitar and vomiting through a sieve vocals are the order of the day on Parasite and clearly won't be to everybody's taste. Its a shame that the overwhelming feeling you get from this disc is that the band are taking the piss as, when they slow things down a bit, they have all the right elements to give us a “proper” death metal album and I for one would like to see them explore this side of their talents a bit more. I could be wrong about See You Next Tuesday's intent and they may well be very serious about what they're doing, I suspect not though, and that means that what you're left with is a strange mix of supposed humour that you can't get from the lyrics due to the intense nature of the musical vehicle that's being used to deliver them. |
