Robin Beck - Livin' On A Dream

Frontiers

Rating - 8/10

Review Paul Williams

Livin’ On A Dream is Robin Beck’s 7th album with songs penned by Beck herself, as well as Jeff Kent, Tommy Denander and James Christian amongst others.

Before I go further, I ought to mention that I am really not a fan of female-fronted rock in general, but this would have to be one of the few exceptions. The reason for this is twofold…the quality of the songwriting, which is first rate, and also Robin Beck’s vocal performance which is as good as I’ve heard from any female in the melodic rock scene.

The album kicks off in fine style with the uptempo title track which is a catchy rocker that certainly benefits from the guitar brilliance of Jimi Bell who graced the last House Of Lords album to such superb effect.

After another couple of decent rockers, the tempo is brought down with the massive ballad “Always” on which Beck’s vocal excels. It’s then back to more mid-tempo territory with “Nothing’s Gonna Change Your World” which features another really catchy chorus.  In fact, the quality of the choruses are a consistent highlight of the album throughout.

The middle section of the album is populated with more catchy mid-uptempo rockers, all of which feature more empassioned vocals and memorable, sing-a-long choruses which you find spinning round your head long after the album has finished, which is always a good sign for me.

The last couple of songs are certainly worthy of mention. The first, “Till The Last Tear Drop Falls” features a duet with Ms Beck’s husband, the always brilliant James Christian, whilst closing track “Love Lies” rounds things off perfectly with a heavy chugging rhythm and yet another great chorus. Surely one of the best tracks on the album…who decided the batting order here???

Overall, a superb example of female fronted melodic rock at its finest. The songs are really strong throughout and Beck has never sounded better. All fans of Beck’s earlier work will be delighted with the quality of this release and all fans of melodic rock in general (female fronted or otherwise) will find something to savour here.
