Quireboys - One More For The Road

Rating - 8/10

Review Paul Williams

I was amazed to find out that 'One More For The Road' is the first ever live Quireboys DVD. I would have thought that a band, with such a strong and well respected stage performance, would have graced our sets before now, but apparently not.

This performance set was recorded at The Mean Fiddler in London at the back end of 2005 and showcases material from their earliest days, right up to the album they were touring to promote at the time, namely 'Well Oiled'.

I think that one of the reasons people love The Quireboys is the complete lack of any pretentiousness. This is down ‘n’ dirty rock ‘n’ roll with no posing and posturing, just quality musicians doing what they do best. I’ve seen them live on at least fifteen occasions in the past and they always deliver that party atmosphere, highlighted by some great bluesy guitar work, sing-a-long anthems and the familiar throaty rasp of frontman Spike.

And then there’s the songs. It’s easy to forget just how good The Quireboys were in their heyday of the late 80s / early 90s, but one glance at the set list on the back cover, let alone a spin through the disc itself, reveals one classic after another, in the form of Hey You, 7 O’Clock, I Don’t Love You Anymore, Mayfair etc etc.

But the “golden oldie” tracks are only half the story. The band are writing some fantastic newer material, such as the awesome “This Is Rock N Roll” which has become a mainstay of their live set since its release a few years back.

The DVD comes with a few extras – the video to their cover version of the Eric Clapton classic “Tears In Heaven”, some highlights from their appearance at the London Guitar Show and some snippets entitled “On Tour”.

Anyone who has been a long-time Quireboys fan should go and buy this DVD as a great reminder of what a great band they both were, and of course still are. For all of those not familiar with their work, settle back, Jack ‘n’ Coke in hand and prepare to immerse yourself in the bar-room party that is The Quireboys live.  Cheers !!!!
