This release comes as a
DVD/CD package that came out late last year but the following review is based on the CD
part of this. The CD is culled from QOTSA's London shows at
the Brixton Academy and Camden Koko last summer although the
DVD spans all of the various line-ups the band has had thus
far and hence the "Over The Years" part of the title..
Opening with "Go with The Flow" from the band's third album
"Songs For The Deaf" QOTSA deliver a veritable live greatest
hits - well almost...there's no 'Lost Art Of Keeping A
Secret', 'Feel Good Hit Of The Summer' or 'First It Giveth'
- spanning all four of their main albums and also the
Desert Sessions side project.
The main feeling you get from listening to this disc is one
of the band's almost casual virtuosity, not Dream Theater
like flash, but an organic feeling that the band could
change pace and direction on a whim and groove like the
entire Harlem Globetrotters squad listening to James Brown
just for good measure.
Notable highlights are Josh Homme's method of dealing with
someone foolish enough to throw missiles at him - not only
is it bizarre to think anyone would pay to get into a gig
just to throw stuff at the band, but Josh Homme is feckin
huge. He was described by Q magazine last year as "dressed
like a city worker off duty, albeit one who could easily
snap you in two - and blistering renditions of "Little
Sister" and "No One Knows".
This CD is an excellent live document of the recent
incarnation of the band, and its evident from these
recordings that Homme has enjoyed his time on these shores,
all I can say is come back soon and do a full UK tour next
time!!
