President Evil - Hell In A Box

AFM

Rating - 5/10

Review John Consterdine

“Hell In a Box” is the new album from German quintet President Evil. Having never heard of the before I didn’t really know what to expect from the album, all I knew was that they were personally selected by Angie Jourgensen (wife of Ministry’s Al) to be the main support to both Ministry and Fear Factory in 2006.

From listening to opening track “Viva La Muerte” it's easy to see the band has been influenced by classic bands such as Motorhead, Destruction and the Wildhearts fused with a much more up-tempo punk vibe thus giving the band an angry, yet powerful sound.  The only draw back being we’ve heard it all before.

Title track “Hell In A Box” is actually quite good, with a mix of solos and raw Tom Araya style vocals however a lot of this album repeats the same formula and, to be honest, after listening to the whole album I wasn’t particularly impressed.

President Evil are a band who have clearly tried to make their mark on metal by trying to create something different, to make them stand out from the crowd. However if the band wants to break into the big leagues then they must try experimenting with their sound even more because currently what they end up sounding like is the drone from a pneumatic drill!
