Review Dougie

Formed by erstwhile Freedom Call bassist Ilker Ersin PowerWorld, as if the band's name didn't give the game away, serve up a dose of good old power metal in the best European tradition. Initially recruiting former Jaded Heart/Faro guitarist Barish Kepic the early line up of PowerWorld featured Faro vocalist Chitty Sampola who subsequently departed the ranks only to be replaced by the star of the show on this, PowerWorld's debut album: Steffen Brunner, who as far I can tell makes his recording debut on this album and without doubt steals the show.

As seems to be the common trend at the minute PowerWorld kicks off with a short intro piece, namely The Dark, which as per spec has a largely classical feel to it but is quickly followed by the truly magnificent Creatures, all galloping bass lines and widdley guitars topped off with Brunner‘s powerful melodic high pitched vocals. Likewise Lake Of Eternity keeps the standard high and in places, is reminiscent of Symphony X.

Throughout the album maintains the high stand set by the opening tracks and, even if some of the song titles may seem somewhat familiar, only one of them is actually a cover. An excellent reworking of the Cutting Crew classic I Died In Your Arms (Tonight), albeit the PowerWorld version is virtually unrecognizable compared to the original ballad recorded by the Cutting Crew, at least until that riff kicks in...

To be honest the whole album is a highlight. Having listened to the CD almost continuously I still have difficult deciding on what the stand out tracks are, it's that consistent from start to finish.  Yes there may be a lot of this style of music around but thanks to a good collection of tunes, excellent production and the vocals of Steffen Brunner this album has much lot going for it.
