Powertrip - Cold Black Lie
Sleazy Rider
Rating - 7/10

2008 has been a bit of a mixed bag so far, in terms of quality, so it was a nice surprise to listen to something that little bit different. Powertrip hail from Sweden but unlike many of their contemporaries have managed to avoid all that Goth-opera stuff and gone for something more retro. They’re a weird mix of late sixties bohemian American Blues Rock and slightly dated, but highly effectual, metal riffing. The Sixties influence is care of vocalist Vikkis Johansson who in football parlance is willing to give it a ‘110 percent, Brian’. She’s no Joplin or Slick and may not even be influenced by either but, for fiery passion and soul searching, she’s pretty scary. Production wise this is very basic stuff and some of her vocal parts are all over the place pitch wise. Yet there is a compelling charm to ‘Cold Black Lie’ that I haven’t heard in ages from a rock or metal act. Sure it’s all a bit mid-paced and samey at times but Per Eriksson offers able support to Johansson with some very nifty riffing. I really like this band and the lo-fi approach probably enhances them if anything. However in a top studio with a full on producer it would be fascinating to hear the final result. ‘Potential’ is the word best used to describe ‘Powertrip’. They’ve got something interesting on offer but sadly that isn’t always a recipe for success these days. Full of moments of intensity, if you are looking for something slightly different, but still accessible, then check this out. Let us know your views on Cold Black Lie
