Pin Drop Violence - Right II Riot

Counter Culture

Rating - 8/10

Review John Consterdine

When it comes to the global metal scene most people think of places like Gothenburg, Florida, Norway or even England for centres of excellence. However Mumbai can now be added to that list as Pin Drop Violence are one of India’s finest metal bands.

“Right II Right” is the groups second album and, according to Wikipedia, they are a hardcore/nu-metal/metalcore outfit. Listening to the opening onslaught that is “No Regrets” though you can clearly hear elements of Soulfly, Cannibal Corpse and Bolt Thrower in the vocals, Joey Jordinson, Igor Cavalera and Dave Lombardo within the drums and as for the guitar work, it's like a cross between the Haunted, Lamb Of God and Pantera. This combination of different styles and sounds is what gives Pin Drop Violence their unique sound, and possibly why they are one of India’s top metal bands. “Rub It In” on the other hand has a much more death metal feel to it, sounding very much like Deicide whereas “Tough As Nails” has that Brazilian sound pioneered by Max and Igor Cavalera over the years.

Lyrically the album deals with anger and hatred and is completely Anti-Politics, like a death metal version of Rage Against The Machine but instead of advocating political activism they advocate sheer brutality. “Break These Damn Walls” again uses the growling vocals and repetitive, brain swelling riffs combined with an As I Lay Dying melodic vocal breakdown before dragging you back kicking and screaming into the metal apocalypse. After an ambient instrumental interlude or two which calm things down a little “An Act Of Violence” takes you by surprise and throws you back into the death metal deep end, almost like a cross between Obituary and Anthrax and a Political riot!

“In Dependence” shows the band’s nu-metal style, with some rapped lyrics mixed in with brutal hardcore breakdown, oh and a very Iron Maiden style solo slapped in the middle. The album’s standout track though is the fast paced, “And This Is Why…”. It’s like a vocal combination of Tom Araya and Jamey Jasta laid over Les Claypool (Primus) on crack bass lines and a pounding Kerry King guitar riff. Finally ending on “Just” which, musically, is the mellowest track on the album but despite this, it doesn’t lose it’s metal undertones, and the Corey Taylor style calm then evil vocal keeps the track alive.

Pin Drop Violence have shown with this album that you don’t need to be from Europe or the USA to make a cracking metal album, so don’t be a Pinhead and make sure you get a copy of this album, you’ll have no regrets!
