Pavlovs Dog - Has Anyone Here Seen Sigfried?

This is a first ever European release of the supposedly lost third album by cult prog rockers, Pavlov’s Dog. It is being released, along with their fourth album, Lost In America, to coincide with the new solo album from the band’s singer, David Surkamp. Surkamp possesses the most incredible falsetto voice which will surely divide listeners into either the love them or hate them camp. To my surprise, I actually quite warmed to it after a couple of songs and it undoubtedly fits perfectly with the prog rock nature of the music itself. Apparently the band split whilst in the process of making this album and it never saw the light of day at the time and 13 more years were to pass by before the band issued anything else. In the intervening period, stories of Surkamp’s untimely demise circulated and achieved almost mythical status, including the suggestion that he had in fact died after ingesting helium before singing. The band had got off to an incredible start in 1973 when they were signed by ABC for a then astounding $500,000. Within weeks of issuing their debut album they were inexplicably dropped by the label and signed for another $500,000 by Columbia who immediately re-released the debut. The album then charted on two separate labels on the Billboard charts, the only time this has ever happened. If you were wondering about the title, apparently the Sigfried referred to was Sigfried Carver, the band’s original violin player, who left the band after the first album and was never heard from again !! And so to the songs. Most are a mixture of prog rock and piano-led love songs, but all are really quite accessible and catchy – often reminiscent of Supertramp. I think overall the songs are not quite as good as those that appear on Lost In America, but there’s something still quite infectious about them There are 10 live bonus tracks as well on this release, including the band’s two most famous songs, “Song Dance” and “Julia”. |
