Panic Cell  - What Doesn't Kill Us...

Anthill

Rating - 8/10

Review Freez

What Doesn't Kill Us is the second offering from homegrown metaller’s Panic Cell and is a step forward for them, huge guitars and melody to die for. From the opening subtle intro to “Stare Into Oblivion”, it’s obvious there is now a maturity and a wealth of ideas floating around which the band have harnessed and channeled into a stabbing, guttural, memorable metal album.

Eleven tracks in all feature on the CD, all with hooks, some guitar driven, some vocal, but all instantly enter the mind and after even just two hearings are embedded in the consciousness. If these guys can carry on making progress, touring ceaselessly and writing material of this high quality, then look out world, maybe, just maybe, the Brits are coming. And these guys deserve to be at the sharp end soon.

What Doesn’t Kill Us is beautifully produced, with everything having crunch and bite but remaining clear and focused, with neat harmony backing vocals adding depth to the crunching riffs and thumping drums. There is Maiden in there, nothing wrong with that, they have a real love for the pace change, but never getting over complicated. Lyrically, we are on familiar alienated ground, but the conviction of the delivery overcomes the retread of the subject matter. There isn’t a bad track, but “Still Purge” displays a confidence unseen previously and they are not afraid to slow it down and harmonise. But if it’s head down metal you want, you won’t be disappointed. It’s that good!
