Out Of Sight - Something Created By Belief EP

Rating - 5.5/10

Review John Lewins

On this, Their debut ep, the Buckinghamshire quartet are clearly tipping their hat into the ring marked emo/pop/punk, as touched upon in my recent review of Cute Is What We Aim For's debut it's difficult to draw a line where bands are merely jumping on a bandwagon or whether they have been inspired by a scene that happens to be currently successful. With Out Of Sight however I'm willing to give their debut e.p the benefit of the doubt seeing as the band were formed in 2005 and openly acknowledge influence from such peers as Taking Back Sunday then its natural that this EP shows a lot of similarity to current "hot" emo bands such as Fall Out Boy or Panic! At The Disco.

That's not to say that Out Of Sight are merely aping those bands as there is enough scope within these five tracks to show promise for the future, as with the irrepressible groove of "Time To Change" they come straight out with a hooky chorus married to some radio friendly riffing. "Amongst The Saints, We March!" has a slower start allied to a crunching riff through the verses and choruses, which when added to some massed backing vocals gives a great singalong track but the fact of the matter is that regardless of how enjoyable this all is there's not a lot of originality on offer here at the moment.

The true measure of out Of Sights talent will be how they take their obvious influences and build upon them, this debut EP will appeal to anyone who is caught up in the current Panic/Fall Out/Taking/Academy fuelled emo scene but won't of itself give the band any kind of identity of their own, this will be a shame as despite the fact that Out Of Sight are at the moment divining the best of Americas post-hardcore scene and adding elements of the UK's brightest lights as well ( the opening of "Race Against Pulsing Egos" is similar in feel to Dopamines "Laruso" for example) as a young band they seem to have a lot to offer and I for one will be keen to hear more from them.
