Our Last Night - The Ghost Among Us

Epitaph

Rating - 6.5/10

Review Darren Brushneen

After a couple of self made demos Our Last Night have been signed to Epitaph records and with their full length debut, The Ghosts Among Us, sadly they have produced nothing new.  Fitting into the already over saturated metalcore/screamo scene they have undoubtedly created the sound that they wish for but the album as a whole doesn't seem to go anywhere with many of the songs simply blending into one.

With a couple of listens there are not that many redeeming features about The Ghost Among Us, with the band appearing to stick to a formulaic style of writing, mixing in guitarist Matt Wentworth’s clean singing with main vocalist, Trevor Wentworth’s growls. These growls are very rough and the two styles of singing don't always compliment each other. That said, the album does grow on the listener a bit withrepeated listens (this review was mostly written before a final spin of the CD meant some changes were in order) and it is noticeable that when the band get things right they can produce good songs.  Opening track, “Symptoms Of A Failing System”, whilst sounding like it could have come from a whole host of other bands, actually starts the album on somewhat of a high.  It promises much from the rest of the album but sadly it also shows, pretty much, all that Our Last Night has to offer, with the band mixing those different vocal styles amongst some decent tunes.

At their best Our last Night have hints of Alexisonfire, such as on “Timing Is Everything” and “Recovery”, which is probably the most memorable part of the album with it’s catchy chorus.  Matt Wentworth has a decent enough voice, although at times his vocals prove quite poppy, sounding as if he would suit an emo band well. At times there are similarities to both Bert McCracken from the Used and in other places Cove Reber from Saosin. In fact “Forecasting” is very similar to Saosin, they even sing about voices in the chorus!

The best song on the album, “This Is Your Lifesaver”, sees the band getting the formula spot on with everything working together well.  It is one of the more melodic songs on the album which, for them, works better and like “Recovery” it has it’s catchy moments thrown in, showing up some of the other material on the album.  Overall Our Last Night offer nothing new, and despite songs undoubtedly sounding good as individual tracks, especially the ones mentioned above, the album sadly drags a little with songs, at times, appearing to be carbon copies of each other.  For those people that are obsessed with this style of music it is probably a decent album, and possibly something worth checking out.
