A six track mini-album from a band formed in 1999 and who relocated to Europe from their native Australia in 2005. Their style is one of Industrial Metal, a genre that arguably peaked in North America in the 90’s but that has continued to spawn many offshoots, more recently in Germany with the likes of Rammstein.  

‘Cyberpunk’ is a fast paced opener full of distorted guitar riffs, angry screaming vocals and powerful beats; all of which combine to make for a dark and bleak musical landscape. ‘Voice In The Machine’ is a more mid-tempo number and, for me, the best song on offer. As you might have guessed from the titles the lyrics are all suitably futuristic and you can imagine this song being used on a film soundtrack, the eerie repetative vocal and incessant beat would be well suited to a Sci-Fi movie. A title like ‘The Fairy and The Reaper’ surely belongs on a European Symphonic Metal album but is, of course, more of the same Ministry – inspired stuff; the stark production adding to the overall effect. 

With titles like ‘Chrome’ and ‘Decay’ it’s all a bit cold and desolate for my taste but the band can all play well enough and the material is intelligent in its execution. For a debut release this is not too bad at all. I think I’m right in saying that Australia is not a country well known for this style of music and so credit should be given to New Project for getting this far.
