Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth

Universal (CID8155)

Rating - 4/10

Review - John Lewins

From the outset can I point out that I can pretty much take or leave Nine Inch Nails. Whilst "The Downward Spiral" still gets the occasional airing eleven years on, I haven't dusted off "Pretty Hate Machine" or "Broken" in a good while (partly due to the latter's inclusion of 90+ tracks of white noise in-between the music) and I didn't ever get round to buying "The Fragile" as it was released just after the birth of my eldest son six years ago (therefore I had other things to concentrate on!) and I wasn't too impressed by the reviews at the time and so subsequently didn't get too bothered about adding it to my collection at a later date.

Trent Reznor seems to delight in constructing his music in an intricate and meticulous fashion, it takes about five years on average to produce a Nine Inch Nail's album and whilst Reznors' skills as a musician and a producer are not in question it  maybe that his reliance on his own input results in a certain uniformity in the material on offer, both past and present. Throughout this album there are elements reminiscent of all of the previous Nine Inch Nails records and I think its probably fair to say that this is partially the intention here.

So you have the faster more aggressive tracks ('Getting Smaller',' You Know What You Are', 'The Hand That Feeds') the slower more piano/keyboard led introspective tracks ('Every Day Is Exactly The Same', 'With Teeth') all updated with what feels like a warmer, more organic production and there are certain moments that echo the feel of James Murphy's excellent LCD Soundystem record from earlier this year.

The main problem I have with the album is that you get the overall impression that, despite the craft that is evident on every track, it seems that Reznor is happy to stay within the boundaries of the genre he virtually invented sixteen years ago. There is very little that is "new" on offer and as such I'm sure that any Nine Inch Nail's fans will love the record but to be honest I can't see too many new converts treading this particular path.
