The Loyalties/Radio Dead Ones - Split EP
Rating - 7/10
Review John Lewins
|
This split EP throws up the UK based Loyalties with Germany's Radio Dead Ones around the loosely based premise that they've both got a song with Jimmy in the title! Actually that's (probably!) not the case given that both bands deliver punk rock of a late 70's vintage that, stylistically, complements each other perfectly. Based on the two tracks submitted for this disc The Loyalties just about edge the mini battle of the bands with both “Black Jimmy” and “Green Eyes” having an easy going sing along punk quality to them, especially the chorus in “Green Eyes”. Radio Dead Ones certainly aren't just making up the numbers though with “Jimmy Does” particularly evoking memories of prime time Clash with its rock and roll riffs and call and response chorus. But “Anchor Song” doesn't quite grab me, the faster tempo making the track fly by without leaving any real impression. So, on the strength of this disc that leaves us with a final score of England 2, Germany 1 and whilst its a disc of two halves The Loyalties did enough in the first period to secure the points. 7/10 overall (4/5 Loyalties, 3/5 Radio Dead Ones). |
