There's
quite a buzz going on in the underground press about Lovvers,
there also seems to be quite a bit of consternation going on
about them in the mainstream as well. After negotiating the
intentional smoke and mirrors act put forth by the PR blurb
that accompanied this release, hint: its not enigmatic to
state that the band are "based nowhere and residing pretty
much everywhere" (They're from Nottinghamshire) and that "Lovvers
is comprised of four ambitious nobodies", it just denies
people the basic facts to write a review. But with that
off my chest, onto the music.
Thankfully when it does come down to what the band can do
to/for your ears, Lovvers really deliver and let their music
do the talking. And don't think that just because the seven
tracks here rattle past in less than thirteen minutes that they
don't have much to say. Over the course of those seven
tracks this band have redefined punk rock for the 21st
century.
That's a
bold statement to make for sure, and I'm sure there will be
many of you that scoff, but no band since the Ramones has
distilled rock down to raw bursts of ragged melodic energy
like Lovvers. They may not have the New Yorkers melodic nous
yet but they do have the same primal energy in abundance.
The
sound here is raw, painfully so at times, but even from a
sterile digital format like a CD you can feel the sweat and
attitude coming from these guys. A couple of the tracks
suffer from the energy rush but in the likes of the mid
paced, bass led "Teenage Shutdown" and the Undertones
evoking "Wasted Youth" Lovvers are truly a band to watch out
for as they deserve to be huge.
